Bedruthan Class

Bedruthan is a mixed aged class of year 5 and year 6 pupils. Our teachers are Mrs Goulbourn (Monday to Wednesday) and Mrs Welch (Thursday and Friday) who are assisted by Mrs Medlin (HLTA),  Mrs Rogers (one to one support) and Mrs C Mcloughlin (0ne to one support).

We learn through a topic based approach allowing us to develop and pursue areas of learning based on the children’s interests. This allows cross curricular teaching of the many aspects of our curriculum. In these current times we are placing even greater emphasis on our PSHE (personal, social and health education) ensuring our children are happy learners.  We hope to take part in many varied activities over the next school year which further enriches our time at Kennall Vale.

In our English lessons we use storytelling and role play techniques to immerse ourselves into the style of the author or purpose of the text. We also use a variety of media to add different elements to our learning. We use a spelling program (Spelling Shed) which we are taught on a Monday and then practise in a series of carousel sessions over the week. We then have a spelling test on the Friday.  A list of words that pupils should be able to spell correctly in their writing, by the end of upper Key Stage 2 can be found by clicking the following link: Spelling Appendix years 5 and 6 from NC 2014

In maths we are following the mastery approach which enables the teaching of maths to be delivered in small steps and creating building blocks for the learning. We also have a daily arithmetic session which has proven to be helpful for our older children who become confident in understanding, quicker at doing and more able to solve arithmetic questions.

We enjoy using computing and APPS to continue our learning in lots of subjects. In maths these include Times Table Rockstars and Maths Shed. In our English we benefit from Borrowbox, Epic and Spelling Shed.

Homework: At the beginning of each new topic our teachers send home  a grid of homework suggestions linked to our topic. We can  pick and choose from the suggestions and earn points for each piece of homework we complete. As well as earning points we also have our homework displayed on the board outside our classroom.  In addition to our topic homework there is the daily expectation to read and practise spellings.
