Bedruthan Class

Bedruthan Class is a year 5 and 6 mixed aged class. Our teachers are Mrs Goulbourn (Monday to Wednesday) and Mrs Welch (Thursday and Friday) who are assisted by Mrs Medlin (Senior Teaching Assistant) and Miss Stephens (one to one support).

We learn through a topic based approach allowing us to develop and pursue areas of learning based on the children’s interests. This allows cross curricular teaching of the many aspects of our curriculum. We love to use our outdoor environment wherever possible in Ponsanooth and enjoy adding our own creativity to our learning. We get to take part in many varied activities over the school year which further enriches our time at Kennall Vale.

In our English lessons we use storytelling and role play techniques to immerse ourselves into the style of the author or purpose of the text. We are following a new spelling program which we are taught on a Friday and then practise in a series of carousel sessions over the following week.  A list of words that pupils should be able to spell correctly in their writing, by the end of upper Key Stage 2 can be found by clicking the following link: Spelling Appendix years 5 and 6 from NC 2014

In maths we are following the mastery approach which enables the teaching of maths to be delivered in small steps and creating building blocks for the learning. We also have a daily arithmetic session which has proven to be helpful for our older children who become confident in understanding, quicker at doing and more able to solve arithmetic questions.

Homework: At the beginning of each new topic our teachers send home  a grid of homework suggestions linked to our topic. We can  pick and choose from the suggestions and earn points for each piece of homework we complete. As well as earning points we also have our homework displayed on the board outside our classroom (take a look next time you pass). In addition to our topic homework there is the daily expectation to read and weekly tasks to complete on Abacus and My Maths.
